Yanggu Unification Hall

Yanggu Unification Hall in Yanggu, Gangwon, is the public observatory and information center on the Korean unification narrative — located in Yanggu, the closest civilian-accessible county to the central section of the inter-Korean military demarcation line and just south of the distinctive Punch Bowl basin (Haean Basin), a geological depression that was one of the most bitterly contested battlegrounds of the Korean War. The complex combines an observatory deck looking toward the demarcation line and into North Korea on clear days, an interpretive museum on the Korean War, post-war divided peninsula, and the long-running unification movement, and a small chapel for visitors who want to mark the visit reflectively. Access is restricted to specific tour times for security reasons — Yanggu sits within the broader Civilian Control Zone and visits are coordinated through the county tour office. Free entry but reservation through the regional tour office (yanggu.go.kr/tour) required at least a day in advance. Allow about 2 hours for the observatory + museum combination. Pair with the broader Yanggu cultural attractions including the Yanggu Prehistoric Museum, the Fourth Tunnel (one of the four discovered North Korean infiltration tunnels), and the Yanggu Peace Museum for a full central-inter-Korean-border cultural day. Winter visits offer clearer skies but harsher observation-deck conditions; late spring or early autumn are more comfortable.
