Korea winter activities — skiing, hot springs, ice fishing 2026

Korea has December through early March covered with snow at scale: Pyeongchang and Yongpyong (2018 Olympic venues) operate world-class ski resorts within 90 minutes of Seoul, the Hwacheon Ice Fishing Festival pulls a million visitors, and onsen-style hot springs run all winter. This 2026 guide covers the four winter activities most-asked by first-time foreign visitors.

Skiing — Pyeongchang and Yongpyong

Yongpyong (the 2018 Olympics alpine venue) and Alpensia operate from late November through early April, snow guaranteed by extensive snow-making. Day pass: ₩90,000–110,000; full equipment rental ₩60,000. Vivaldi Park and Phoenix Park are alternative resorts closer to Seoul (90 min vs 2 hr). Korail's KTX from Seoul Station to Jinbu Station (Pyeongchang area) takes ~75 minutes for ₩28,000 — combine with the resort's own free shuttle. Lessons in English run ₩60,000–80,000 for 2 hours.

Hot springs (oncheon)

Korea's hot-spring culture is closer to Japanese onsen than European spa — gender-segregated, fully nude in the bath section. Best foreigner-friendly options: Suanbo Onsen (Chungju, alkaline), Bugok Onsen (Changwon, sulfur), Asan Onyang Spavis (Asan, family-friendly). Day-pass ₩12,000–25,000. Also visit Sokcho's Cheoksan Onsen for foliage-ringed mountain views in late autumn through January. Most jjimjilbang (urban Korean spa) include hot mineral water; the difference is depth of bath culture.

Hwacheon Ice Fishing Festival

Held early-to-mid January in Hwacheon (Gangwon), this is one of the most-photographed Korean winter events — fishing for sancheoneo (mountain trout) through holes drilled in 40cm-thick river ice, with ice slides, sculpture art, and traditional sledding. 2026 dates: January 3–25 (verify on official site). Tickets ~₩13,000 day pass + ~₩5,000 fishing rod rental. Travel from Seoul: KTX/intercity bus to Chuncheon (75 min), then 1-hour bus to Hwacheon. Day-trip is feasible; 2,000+ tour operators run shuttle packages.

What to pack

Korean winter is dry and cold — Seoul averages -10 to 5°C in January. Down jacket, thermal layers, gloves, and beanie are essential. For skiing, ski suits can be rented at all major resorts (₩40,000/day) so don't pack one. Hand warmers (sold at all CU/7-Eleven for ₩1,000) are a Korean staple. Hotel slippers are usually provided; bring socks for indoor floors at temples or hot springs.

Korea winter tips

  • Book ski-resort hotels 4 weeks ahead for January–February peak weekends.
  • Hwacheon Ice Festival opens 7 a.m.–6 p.m. — fishing slots fill by 9:30 a.m. on weekends.
  • Hot-spring etiquette is identical to jjimjilbang: shower thoroughly before entering pools.
  • Subway-station heated waiting rooms exist at major Seoul stations — useful refuge during day-trip transit.
  • Frozen water in plastic bottles is a real risk in cars overnight; insulate or bring back inside.
Can I learn to ski in Korea?

Yes — Yongpyong, Vivaldi, and Phoenix Park all run beginner programs. Alpensia and Yongpyong have English-speaking instructors; book 1 week ahead. 2-hour group lessons run ₩60,000–80,000 plus equipment.

Is the Hwacheon ice fishing safe?

Yes — ice thickness is monitored daily (40cm minimum required), patrol staff on duty. Slips on ice are the most common injury; wear non-skid footwear. Children under 7 must be accompanied.

When does Korean snow start and end?

Reliable snow at high-altitude ski resorts: late November to early April. Seoul gets light snow December through February but melts within days. Gangwon mountains stay snow-covered through March.

Are hot springs unisex?

No — bath sections are gender-segregated and fully nude. Some resorts have unisex outdoor mineral pools where swimsuits are required; verify on the spa's website.
