Sokcho + Seoraksan 2-Day Weekend Guide 2026
2026 weekend guide to Sokcho and Mt. Seoraksan from Seoul — hike route, fish market, raw fish meal, hot springs, intercity bus access.
Sokcho is the easternmost coastal city closest to Seoul (3.5 hours by intercity bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal, ₩22,000) and the gateway to Mt. Seoraksan — Korea's most-visited national park outside Seoul. A 2-day weekend covers the cable car to Gwongeumseong, the Sinheungsa Temple complex, raw fish at Sokcho Daepo Port, and Cheoksan hot springs. This 2026 guide builds the full weekend route.
Day 1 — Seoraksan park, cable car, temple
Take the express bus from Seoul (Express Bus Terminal, 3.5h, ~₩22,000) — first bus 6 a.m., last 11 p.m. From Sokcho terminal, taxi to Seoraksan park entry (15 min, ₩8,000). Park entry ₩4,500. Take the cable car (₩15,000 round-trip, every 5 min, 5 min ride) up to Gwongeumseong rock. From there, an additional 30-minute scramble reaches the summit area — phenomenal panorama in clear weather. Visit Sinheungsa Temple at the cable car base (free, 1300 years old). Total park time: 4-5 hours. Return to Sokcho for evening.
Day 1 evening — Sokcho seafood
Daepo Port (Sokcho fishing port, 15 min from city center by bus 7) is the famous seafood spot. Live raw fish (sashimi-style hoe) ₩30,000-60,000 per portion, eaten with kochujang (red pepper paste) and lettuce wraps. The fish-cake (eomuk) market here has 30+ stalls of grilled fish-cake skewers (₩2,000). Add a sea-urchin rice bowl (sungsam-bibimbap, ₩18,000) for Sokcho specialty. Daepo Port closes by 8 p.m.; eat early.
Day 2 — Cheoksan hot springs and beach
Morning at Cheoksan Onsen (Sokcho's natural hot springs) — ₩12,000-18,000 day pass for full bath access including outdoor mineral pools with mountain views. Foreigner-friendly with English signage. Run by a foreign-friendly resort hotel; non-staying guests welcome. Then walk to Sokcho Beach (3 km from city center) for shoreline lunch. Return bus to Seoul departs from 4 p.m. (last 9 p.m.). Total weekend cost: ₩90,000-150,000 per person including transit, park entry, hotel, and meals.
Sokcho weekend tips
- Express bus from Seoul: book 1 day ahead via Korail Talk app (English UI). Friday evening + Sunday afternoon sell out fastest.
- Seoraksan cable car: queues build by 9 a.m.; arrive 8:30 for the first lift.
- Best season: late September through October for foliage; April for cherry blossoms; mountain summit gets snow December-March.
- Daepo Port raw fish: pick fish from the live tank, vendor cuts it, you take to a sit-down place ₩4,000 cover charge for table.
- Hot springs etiquette: same as jjimjilbang — fully nude in bath, gender-segregated.
- Hotels in Sokcho range ₩60,000-150,000/night; Sokcho Beach Resort and Lotte Resort are foreigner-friendly.
Is Seoraksan hike difficult?
The cable car + Gwongeumseong scramble (Day 1 above) is moderate — 30 minutes of scrambling for adults of average fitness. Full peak (Daecheongbong, 1,708m) is 8-10 hour serious hike requiring permits and experience. The cable car version covers 90% of foreign visitors.
When does Seoraksan get foliage?
Late October through mid-November is peak. Above 800m elevation, foliage starts late September. The cable car summit area peaks October 25-November 5 in 2026.
Can I day-trip Seoraksan from Seoul?
Possible but tight — 3.5h each way leaves 4-5 hours on site. Better as 1 overnight in Sokcho. Day-trippers should focus only on the cable car loop, not Sinheungsa.
Is Sokcho expensive?
Mid-range — bus + hotel + 2 meals per person ₩90,000-150,000 for the weekend. Cheaper than Jeju or Busan weekends. Premium options (resort hotel, premium hot spring, hanwoo dinner) push to ₩250,000.
