Why go

Gwanghwamun Gate is the main southern gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace and one of the most iconic landmarks in Seoul. Originally built in 1395 as the front gate of Joseon's primary royal palace, it was destroyed multiple times by war and colonial-era relocation, and finally restored to its original location and orientation in 2010 after a multi-year archaeological reconstruction. The gate's three arched passageways open onto Gwanghwamun Plaza and the long ceremonial axis of central Seoul, with Bugaksan rising directly behind. The royal guard changing ceremony takes place daily and is one of the most photographed events in the city. Free to view from the plaza; combine with Gyeongbokgung tour.
