Why go

Jeongdok Library in central Seoul's Bukchon area is one of Seoul's most architecturally distinctive public libraries, located in a beautifully preserved early-20th-century school building that was the original location of the historic Gyeonggi High School (1900-1976). The library combines a substantial public reading collection with the original school's preserved historical architecture — high-ceilinged reading rooms, period stairwells, original classroom doors. The surrounding tree-shaded grounds (originally the school playground) are open to the public and used heavily by Seoul residents as a quiet daily-walk venue in the heart of one of the city's most expensive districts. Free entry. Best on weekday mornings. About 60 minutes for a slow visit. Pair with surrounding Bukchon Hanok Village.
