선운사(고창)

Seonunsa Temple in Gochang, Jeollabuk-do, sits at the base of Seonunsan and is one of Korea's most beautifully sited Buddhist monasteries — known particularly for its pre-bloom forest of camellia trees behind the main hall, which blooms scarlet against snow in late winter and early spring. The compound dates to the 6th century and contains several national treasures, including a finely carved Buddhist relief on a cliff face and the temple's main wooden hall. The approach passes through a stream-cut valley with stone bridges and old maples that turn brilliant in November. Allow about ninety minutes including the camellia grove behind the temple. Pair with Seonunsan ridge trails or Gochang dolmen UNESCO site.
