Why go: Limited-time festival — plan around the dates

Pyeongchang Songeo Festival shifts Korea's winter ice-fishing culture toward Songeo (rainbow trout), Pyeongchang's signature winter fish raised in clean alpine streams. The festival drills fishing holes across the frozen Odaecheon, runs gear rental and on-site grilling, and adds ice-sledding zones, traditional games, and snow-themed photo zones. Compared to Hwacheon's larger Sancheoneo festival, Pyeongchang's version is calmer and easier on first-time foreign visitors, and the surrounding ski area landscape — with Daegwallyeong, Phoenix Park, and Yongpyong nearby — makes it natural to combine into a multi-day winter trip. As a 2018 Winter Olympics host city, Pyeongchang's winter infrastructure and signage are also more international than most Korean rural festivals.
