Why go: Limited-time festival — plan around the dates

Daegwallyeong Snow Festival runs in Pyeongchang's high alpine area at the edge of the Taebaek mountains, where heavy winter snowfall creates conditions almost no other Korean city can match. The festival builds large snow and ice sculptures, ski- and sled-experience zones, and outdoor markets with hot Gangwon-do food and drinks. Light installations and night performances extend the program into the evening, taking advantage of the long winter darkness. For travelers visiting Korea in winter looking for an alpine experience that complements the urban side of Seoul, Daegwallyeong is one of the most reliably snowy festival destinations in the country.
