Andong Hahoe Folk Village day trip

Andong Hahoe Folk Village is a UNESCO World Heritage living village — yes, people still actually live there in traditional hanok homes built over 600 years. It's one of Korea's most-recommended for foreigners interested in Joseon-era life. From Seoul: KTX to Andong Station (1h 35min, ₩28,000) plus 30 min taxi to the village. A day trip is realistic; 1 overnight at a hanok within the village is the special experience. This 2026 guide covers the route.

Hahoe Village — what to see

Entry ₩5,000. The village (entered through pine tree paths) has 124 traditional homes, of which 12 are designated cultural treasures. Walk the central village paths past Yangjindang (oldest standing house, 1450s), Chunghyodang (Joseon prime minister's home, 1572), and the Confucian school (Byeongsan Seowon, 1572). The Mask Dance Festival performance — Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori — runs daily at 2 p.m. (April-October) and Saturdays year-round (₩4,000). 90-minute show, no advance booking, English subtitles since 2023.

Andong soju distillery + jjimdak

On the way to or from the village, stop at Andong Folk Soju Museum (15 min by taxi, free) — Korea's most famous regional soju, distilled traditionally to 40-45% ABV (vs. 17% mass-market). Tasting (₩5,000), bottle purchase ₩15,000-30,000. For lunch, Andong Jjimdak Alley near the bus terminal — the town's most famous dish: braised chicken with vegetables, glass noodles, and soy sauce. ₩40,000-60,000 for a 2-3 person portion. Or try Andong-style heot-jesa-bap (mock ancestral ritual rice bowl, ₩15,000) at restaurants near the folk village.

Logistics — getting there and back

KTX Seoul to Andong: 1h 35min, ₩28,000, 7 trains daily (more on weekends). From Andong Station, take taxi to Hahoe Folk Village (35 min, ₩20,000) or local bus 46 (50 min, ₩1,500). Bus 46 from Andong Bus Terminal runs every 60-90 min. For day trip: catch the 8 a.m. KTX from Seoul, return on the 6 p.m. KTX — 8 hours on site is generous. For overnight at a hanok stay (₩100,000-180,000/night), book 4 weeks ahead.

Andong tips 2026

  • KTX Seoul-Andong: book 1 week ahead. Friday afternoon and Sunday evening sell out fastest.
  • Mask Dance Festival: late September-early October is the international festival week, with multiple shows daily.
  • Hanok stays in the village have minimal modern amenities (no shower in some rooms); choose carefully.
  • Andong soju is much stronger than mass-market — small portions, food alongside.
  • Andong jjimdak comes spicy by default; ask "spicy small (덜 매워주세요)" for milder version.
  • Cherry blossoms reach Andong by April 5-8, slightly earlier than Seoul.
Is Andong worth a 1-day trip from Seoul?

Yes for cultural travelers — UNESCO village + traditional soju + jjimdak fills 7-8 hours nicely. For deeper experience (mask dance + Byeongsan Seowon + hanok overnight), 2 days fits better.

When is the Andong Mask Dance Festival?

Late September through early October annually. 2026 dates likely September 25 - October 4 (verify on official site). The festival week has free outdoor performances daily; village shows continue year-round.

Is Andong jjimdak spicy?

Yes by default — heavy red pepper. Most restaurants accommodate "less spicy" requests; some have white versions (white sauce instead of red pepper) marked separately on menu.

Can I do Andong without Korean?

Folk village has English signage at major buildings. Mask dance has English subtitles. Restaurant menus in tourist area are bilingual. Naver Map covers everything; eSIM helps with translation.
