Seoul jjimjilbang — Dragon Hill spa entrance and traditional Korean bathhouse

Jjimjilbang is the single most-recommended and most-anxiety-producing activity for foreign visitors. Nudity in the bath area is the sticking point. The upside is that once you experience it, most foreign friends rank it as their favorite Korea activity — after they get past the first hour. Here is the beginner guide with real venue recommendations.

Dragon Hill Spa (Yongsan) — the safest first visit

Dragon Hill (Yongsan Station Line 1/Airport, exit 1) is the largest and most foreign-visitor-friendly jjimjilbang in Seoul. 7 floors, ₩15,000 daytime entry, ₩20,000 after 20:00 (24-hour access). English-speaking staff at the entrance. The genderless jjimjilbang common areas are on floors 3-5 with saunas, snack bars, and sleeping rooms. Nudity is only in the gender-separated bath area on floors 1-2.

Siloam Sauna (Seoul Station) — traditional, small

Siloam (Seoul Station exit 1) is smaller and more traditional. ₩12,000, less foreign-visitor-oriented, more locals. Best for a shorter 2-3 hour visit. The rooftop sauna is unusual and worth trying. English is limited but staff will point.

Itaewon Land — foreign-friendly small option

Itaewon Land (Itaewon Station exit 4) is smaller than Dragon Hill but oriented to Itaewon's foreign resident population. ₩13,000 entry. English signs throughout. Better first-visit than Dragon Hill for extreme introverts who want less crowd exposure.

What actually happens step by step

Front desk: pay, receive wristband + towel + jjimjilbang uniform (shorts + short-sleeve top). Change room: strip fully, put clothes in locker (wristband is key). Enter bath area naked — shower thoroughly at the sit-down showers before entering any pool. Try 3-4 pool temperatures. Rinse. Enter changing room, put on the jjimjilbang uniform. Now you can go to genderless floors, saunas, food court, sleeping rooms. Duration: 3-5 hours typical.

First-visit survival

  • Do not skip the pre-pool shower — it is the etiquette that lets you enter pools respected.
  • Tattoos are accepted at Dragon Hill and Itaewon Land; some smaller neighborhood jjimjilbang refuse.
  • Bring underwear you can wear out afterward; the wet swimsuit-style undies are the awkward part of the exit.
  • Do not go the day of a spicy meal — heat + spice + sauna is a rough combination.
  • Food-court ramyeon and sikhye (sweet rice drink) after 2 hours is the classic combo.
Do I have to be naked?

In the bath area, yes. In the jjimjilbang lounge and sauna areas (worn uniform), no. You can also skip the bath area entirely and stay in the uniform-only zones.

Is it OK for solo female travelers?

Yes. Bath areas are strictly gender-separated. Female-only sleeping rooms exist on separate floors — Dragon Hill's is on the 4th floor.

How much does a full jjimjilbang session cost?

Entry ₩12,000-20,000 + food ~₩10,000 + occasional massage ₩30,000-50,000. Full budget: ₩25,000-70,000 depending on additions.
