Why go

Hwajinpo Lake (part of the Gangwon Peace Region National Geopark) is a coastal lagoon-style lake on the eastern coast of Goseong, Gangwon, near the inner Korean border, designated as part of Korea's Gangwon Peace Region National Geopark for its distinctive geological-and-ecological characteristics. Hwajinpo is a brackish coastal lagoon — separated from the East Sea by a narrow sand spit — with a distinctive landscape character that combines the open lake surface, the surrounding pine forests, and the East Sea visible just beyond the sand spit. The lake is also historically significant as the site of vacation residences for both former South Korean president Syngman Rhee and former North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. Best paired with broader Goseong-area itineraries that include the DMZ-area scenic loop.
