Daebudo Island

Daebudo Island in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, is the largest of the West Sea coastal islands within the Seoul metropolitan area, connected to the mainland by the 4.4-km Sihwa Barrier Road that opened in 1994 as part of the Sihwa Lake tidal-flat reclamation project. The island's shifting coastal environment (originally a saltwater tidal-flat area, now partly enclosed within the reclaimed Sihwa Lake) has given it a mixed coastal-and-inland-lake character that shapes both the ecology and the visitor experience. Major destinations on the island include the coastal walking-and-cycling paths along the western shore (with sunset views across the West Sea), a substantial cluster of casual seafood restaurants specializing in the local West Sea shellfish, Daebu Wine Farm (Korea's first commercial wine estate, opened 2000), Nueseom Lighthouse Observatory (batch 5 verified place — accessed via the twice-daily tidal causeway), and multiple pension-style accommodations for overnight visitors. Free island access (parking modest). Allow at least half a day, longer if combining coastal-walk + winery + Nueseom low-tide crossing. Access: about 60 minutes from Gangnam Seoul by car via the West Coast Expressway. Best in autumn or spring for comfortable walking weather; summer weekend visits are noticeably busier. Pair with the broader Ansan West Sea coastal cluster including Sihwa Lake and Oido Island.
