Why go

Ganghwa History Museum on Ganghwa Island is the dedicated public museum on the island's substantial historical role. Ganghwa was Goryeo's wartime capital from 1232 to 1270 during the Mongol invasions, the site of the 1866 Byeongin Yangyo French invasion, the 1871 Sinmi Yangyo American invasion, and the 1876 Treaty of Ganghwa that opened Korea to Japan — making this small island one of Korea's most historically dense locations. The museum holds about 4,000 objects including Goryeo-period royal artifacts, military weapons from the 19th-century invasions, and bilingual interpretation that does not soften the difficult late-Joseon narrative. Free entry. About 2 hours. Pair with the Ganghwa Dolmen UNESCO site or Ganghwa Peace Observatory.
