Hwamunseok Cultural Center

Hwamunseok Cultural Center on Ganghwa Island is the dedicated public museum on hwamunseok — the traditional Korean reed-and-rush sedge mat with intricate woven patterns that was historically the most prestigious form of Korean floor covering. Ganghwa-area sedge mats specifically were used in the Joseon royal palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung) as gift-quality material for the royal quarters, and the broader Ganghwa hwamunseok tradition has been continuously practiced for over 600 years, with the technique surviving as a designated Intangible Cultural Heritage. The center combines a museum on hwamunseok history and weaving technique, working artisan studios where visitors can watch master weavers at work, hands-on weaving workshops with reservation (typically 60-90 minutes to produce a small piece), and a substantial retail strip where finished pieces are available at prices ranging from KRW 30,000 for coasters up to several million won for full room-scale mats.
