Why go

Goseong Wanggok Village is a remarkably intact 14th-century Joseon village in Goseong, Gangwon, sheltered in a hidden basin between low ridges that historically protected it from coastal raiders, war damage, and modern redevelopment alike. About fifty traditional houses survive — many still inhabited — with the distinctive northern Korean bukseo-style design adapted for harsh winters. The village is designated a Cultural Heritage Important Folklore Material, and a low-key visitor center explains the architecture. Walking the lanes takes about an hour, and a few houses operate as hanok stays for travelers wanting an overnight. Quietest on weekday mornings. Pair with Hwajinpo Beach for a full Goseong coastal day.
