Why go

Sandglass Park sits on the dramatic East Coast bluff at Jeongdongjin, Gangwon, anchored by an enormous functioning hourglass — among the world's largest, with a full year of sand inside that flips every January 1. The park grew up around the cult success of a 1990s Korean drama filmed nearby, and its perch directly above the railway and the East Sea makes for some of the country's most photographed sunrise scenes. Beyond the hourglass itself, a small museum traces time-keeping history, and the bluff connects to the famous Jeongdongjin train station — the closest station to the sea on Earth. Best at sunrise. Combine with the Jeongdongjin Time Museum housed in restored train cars.
