Why go

The War Memorial of Korea is the country's flagship military-history museum, located in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on the former site of the Korean Army headquarters. Opened in 1994, it walks visitors through Korean military history from the Three Kingdoms period through the Korean War (1950–1953) and into contemporary defense, with separate halls for major dynastic conflicts, the Imjin War, the colonial-era resistance, the Korean War's chronology and key battles, and a memorial wall inscribed with the names of Korean and UN soldiers who died in the war. Outdoor exhibits include large-scale displays of tanks, fighter jets, helicopters, and naval vessels. The site is one of the most-visited public museums in Seoul and is the natural starting point for travelers interested in modern Korean military history. Best given a half-day.
