Why go

Yeokdong Seowon in Andong is a Joseon-era seowon (Confucian academy) founded in the late 16th century to honor scholars Lee Jeong-hoe and Bak Yeon-bin and serve as a regional advanced-study academy. The compound combines a substantial wooden lecture hall, two memorial-shrine halls dedicated to the honored scholars, student dormitories, and a stone-walled garden. Yeokdong is one of the better-preserved seowon in the broader Andong area — the city has the densest concentration of seowon in Korea — and is part of the broader UNESCO-conversation around the nine "Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies" inscription (other Andong-area seowon are inscribed; Yeokdong is closely related). Free entry. About 45 minutes. Pair with Hahoe Folk Village UNESCO site.
