Why go

Hwaseong Haenggung is the temporary palace of UNESCO Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, set inside the fortress walls as the royal residence used by King Jeongjo during his planned royal visits to Hwaseong. Built in 1789 (later expanded), Hwaseong Haenggung is one of Korea's largest and most architecturally significant Joseon-era haenggung (temporary palace) sites, designated as Historic Site of South Korea. The compound includes the main throne hall, royal residential quarters, government-office buildings, supporting infrastructure, and connecting walled courtyards arranged according to traditional Joseon palace-design principles. The palace is also famous as the site of the Jeongjo Royal Procession reenactment that takes place during the autumn Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival. Best paired with the broader Hwaseong Fortress walking experience.
