Why go

Unhyeongung Royal Residence is a Joseon-era royal residence in central Seoul, located adjacent to Anguk Station as one of central Seoul's most historically significant royal-residential sites. The compound was the residence of Heungseon Daewongun (Yi Ha-eung), the father of Emperor Gojong of Korea who served as effective regent during Gojong's youth. As Daewongun, Yi Ha-eung was the de facto ruler of Korea from 1864 to 1873, leading aggressive Confucian reforms and resistance against Western and Japanese pressure. The compound includes the typical Joseon yangban residential arrangement of multiple courtyards and halls, with period furnishings, interpretive displays on Daewongun's life and political legacy, and seasonal cultural programming. Pairs naturally with the broader Bukchon-and-Insadong walking circuit and Gyeongbokgung Palace.
