Tamna Cultural Festival is Jeju's largest annual cultural event, taking its name from the ancient Tamna kingdom that ruled the island before Joseon-era integration. The festival anchors the island-wide program with a procession celebrating Tamna's three founding clans (Go, Yang, Bu), traditional Jeju music and dance, haenyeo (women diver) performances, and shamanic ritual reenactments unique to Jeju. Around it, contemporary programs — markets, family activities, illuminated parades — fill central Jeju City and other Jeju venues. For travelers who have already done Jeju's beaches and oreum hikes, the Tamna festival is the most direct entry into the island's distinct pre-modern cultural identity.
