Why go

Tongdosa is one of Korea's most-revered Buddhist temples, set on Mt. Yeongchuksan in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, and one of the three jewel-monasteries of Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism (representing the Buddha-jewel). Tongdosa was founded in 646 CE by the monk Jajang during the Silla period, and the temple is widely regarded as one of Korea's most architecturally and spiritually significant Buddhist monasteries. The compound includes the main law hall, multiple side prayer halls, an extensive monastic complex, and the surrounding Mt. Yeongchuksan natural landscape. Tongdosa is part of the UNESCO Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries of Korea (2018) inscription. Best given a half-day, paired with broader Yangsan-area itineraries.
