Why go

Naewonsa Valley (Naewonsa Temple) is a wooded mountain valley running up Mt. Cheonseongsan in Yangsan, Gyeongsangnam-do, with Naewonsa — a Silla-period mountain temple traditionally founded in the 7th century by the monk Wonhyo — anchoring the upper end of the valley. The valley is widely counted among the more reliable autumn-color destinations in southeast Korea, with maple, oak, and ginkgo running thick along the stream-side approach trail in mid-to-late October. Naewonsa itself is a small atmospheric Seon (Zen) practice temple rather than a major tourist temple, with a single main hall, side prayer halls, and meditation quarters wrapped in old pine. Trails continue past the temple onto the broader Cheonseongsan ridge for a moderate full-day hike. Best in autumn for color and pairs naturally with broader Yangsan and Tongdosa-area itineraries.
