Why go

Byeongsanseowon is a major Joseon-era seowon (Confucian academy) in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, jointly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 along with eight other Korean seowon as a representative example of Joseon-era Confucian academy heritage. Byeongsanseowon was originally built in the late-16th century to honor the prominent Joseon Confucian scholar Yu Seong-ryong (1542-1607) — a key political figure of the Imjin War period and one of the central Joseon scholar-officials of his era. The compound features striking architectural integration with the surrounding river-and-mountain landscape, with the Mandaeru pavilion overlooking the Nakdong River as one of Korea's most-cited Joseon-era architectural achievements. Best paired with broader Andong UNESCO heritage itineraries.
