Chilgok Gasansanseong Fortress and Gasanbawi Rock

Chilgok Gasansanseong Fortress and Gasanbawi Rock is a late-Joseon mountain fortress in Chilgok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, located on Mt. Gasansan. Gasanbawi Rock is a natural feature near the fortress. The fortress was constructed during the late Joseon era (built in the 17th century, expanded through the 18th century) as a defensive site protecting the southeastern approaches to central Korea, and is one of Korea's later mountain-fortress sites in the tradition of Namhansanseong and Bukhansanseong. The site includes surviving fortress walls (about 5 km of preserved wall lines), designated as a Historic Site of South Korea. It also features the Gasanbawi Rock formation, a distinctive exposed rocky outcrop that has been a local landmark since pre-fortress times. Walking and hiking trails thread the mountain landscape, with viewing decks offering broad panoramas of the Chilgok-and-Daegu-basin countryside — the fortress ridge is one of the highest continuous view points in the Chilgok area. This location is suitable for travelers interested in Korean mountain-fortress heritage and moderate hiking; the fortress-wall loop runs about 4-5 hours at a reflective pace. It can be combined with itineraries in the Daegu (roughly 1 hour by car) and Gyeongbuk regions, particularly with Palgongsan National Park to the east.
