Cheongsong Eoreumgol Valley (Cheongsong National Geopark)

Eoreumgol Valley is a unique cold-air valley in Cheongsong UNESCO Global Geopark (designated 2017), where rock-shaded fissures release sub-zero air through summer and ice persists in deep crevices into July. Walking the half-kilometer trail from the parking area, summer visitors feel the air temperature drop by 10 degrees within meters of the cooling vents, an effect explained at the small geopark interpretive center at the trailhead. The phenomenon is caused by warm summer air being cooled as it passes through the talus slope's deep cold-trap structure — the valley's rock architecture combines a deep talus slope with subsurface air movement that produces the reverse-summer temperature gradient. The specific geological configuration is one of the most-cited cold-valley examples in Asia and part of what earned Cheongsong its UNESCO Global Geopark status. Most striking June through August when the temperature contrast is at its sharpest. Best in mid-morning before the sun heats the valley floor. Free access.
