Why go

Jeonju Pungpaejigwan (Jeonju Gaeksa) is a Joseon-era public guesthouse-and-administrative building in central Jeonju, originally built in 1473 as a gaeksa — the standard Joseon-era public guesthouse where the Joseon king's portrait was symbolically enshrined and where visiting officials, dignitaries, and royal envoys were received. The building is one of Korea's largest surviving Joseon-era gaeksa, with a distinctive wide single-story wooden hall featuring impressive carved ceiling work and architectural details. As a gaeksa specifically housing the symbolic presence of the king, Pungpaejigwan held particular ceremonial importance — Jeonju was the ancestral seat of the Joseon Yi royal house, which gave the building added royal-symbolic weight. Best paired with broader Jeonju Hanok Village circuit and other Jeonju historic sites.
