Why go
Junam Eco Learning Center in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, is a public wetland ecology center on the shore of Junam Reservoir — one of Korea's most important inland freshwater wetlands and a designated Ramsar Site as key wintering ground for migratory waterbirds. The reservoir hosts tens of thousands of migratory birds each winter, including significant populations of white-naped cranes (endangered, wintering here from Siberia), swan geese, Baikal teal, and multiple wintering duck species. The center combines an interpretive wetland-ecology museum, observation towers with mounted scopes overlooking the reservoir, bilingual signage on migratory-bird identification and Ramsar wetland-conservation context, and a small library-and-education area. Guided birdwatching walks with volunteer ecology guides run on scheduled weekends in season (October-February). Free entry. Allow about 90 minutes for the center + observation towers. Best November through February for peak wintering populations; early morning viewing produces the largest bird counts. Access: about 30 minutes from Changwon downtown by car; public transit via local bus from Changwon Central Station. Pair with the broader Changwon cultural attractions including the Changwon Museum, Jinhae naval-history district, or Masan Fish Market for a full Changwon cultural-and-nature day.
