Why go

Soemokjae is a 740-meter mountain pass in southern Gyeongsangnam-do, on the historic east-west foot route that connected the Hadong-Sancheong region with the Geochang basin before modern roads. The pass — its name ("iron-neck pass") references the steep climb on either side — is now a quiet trekking destination on the Jirisan Dulle-gil long-distance trail, with the steep climb on either side rewarded by sweeping views over both river basins from the saddle. The full Dulle-gil section that includes Soemokjae takes about 6 hours; the shorter "summit only" climb from either base village takes about 2 hours. Best in spring for fresh greens and autumn for foliage. Pair with broader Dulle-gil planning.
